Reaver Titan WIP

Posted: September 23, 2012 in Uncategorized

Did some work on the Reaver over the weekend between playing in Titans of War and trying to get a few other things done.  So Friday I spent most of the afternoon cleaning the kit.  It was a massive job and one I wouldn’t recommend if you don’t own a dremmel with cutting wheel, a good quality dust mask and dust extractor.  It took me about 3hrs of cutting, grinding, sanding, slicing, drilling, heating, cooling and filing to get the kit cleaned up.  It was epic.  I’d pitty the fool who tries to clean this kit if they only have a saw, clippers and a hobby knife.

So the next step was to start working on how I wanted it to be posed, although I wont be getting to the legs for some time, as I’m going to be painting the interior first.  For me getting the pose of this Titan right is really important.  Just to get it right in my mind and to give me something to look forward to as I know the interior is going to be a long tedious road.

As I know that this is going to be a seriously top heavy kit, I cut about 15 of these 2mm spring steal rods to insert into the kit at all the important joints to help make the it strong.  I’ll also drill shallow 2mm holes in the male and female connectors of each joint as well so that the expoxy resin that I’ll use to assemble the kit with will be able to grip into the holes to provide mechanical rigidity as well.

I then set about getting the pose sorted out.  One thing thats really important is to get the centre of gravity right.  Which is keeping the bulk of its weight over the centre of the kit.  Basically you know if you’ve done this right is if the kit stays up without any support. This photo shows the Titan held together with on the steal pins keeping it together.

As you can see, this is a seriously big kit.  Hopefully this can give you an idea of how I want it to look.  It’ll be pointing its left hand weapon system (right hand side of the pic) at a target while the other arms weapon system will be relaxed.

So next stage was to start working on getting the interior ready for paint.  I must have spent about 2hrs checking the way this rather complicated piece of the kit went together.  Test fitting the various components together to ensure that when its all painted it will go together hassle free.  This was actually a lot more complicated that it seemed at the start.  Many of the components had to have very minor trimming done and also the odd bit of heat gun action to ensure a smooth fit.  So after finally getting through this, I got everything ready for under coating and painting…

I then started to get all the base colours sorted out and thats about as far as I got

Next up well be developing the details and painting the servitors.  Then it’ll be cutting in a few areas with shading and then applying oils and start weathering…

Ok, thats it.  I aim to do some more work on it this week but we’ll see how we go

Reaver Titan

Well, I had some great news yesterday.  My Reaver Titan arrived in the mail, and holy quick delivery batman it arrived in no time at all.  I ordered it last Thursday night and it arrived Wednesday afternoon.  Amazing.  Anyways, this is a seriously massive kit.  By far the biggest I’ve ever seen for a wargaming miniature.  Weighing in at a hefty 5.2kg, this bad boy is an amazing sight to see.

So I went with the Apoc missile launcher, the melta cannon and laser blaster weapon system load out.  As you can imagine I was pretty pumped to get a good look at it, however I didnt get home to late last night so I wasnt able to spend much time inspecting the pieces.  Did I mention there are shit loads of pieces?  Fuck me dead there are a shit tin of pieces!  Its astonishing.  So I took these photos last night just to illustrate the detail of the kit and the quality of the cast.  I’m very impressed.

The bag on the bottom left corner is the biggest and contains all of the leg parts.  By far the most complicated aspect of the model.

aaaahhhh we all know what that is, the very distinctive head of the Reaver.  This kit has an enormous amount of cleaning up to do.  Every piece, especially the larger pieces, have massive pour points attached to them.  I estimate that 1/4 of the weight of the box has gone  just in these pour points.

This is the Tech Priest crew member that dwells in the body of the model.  As usual Forge Worlds minis are correctly scaled, well cast and realistic.  It does have some extremely fine pieces tho and you must be careful not to loose them.

The instructions are much better than I expected and given the audience who’d buy this type of model, well laid out and thorough.

No shit

So today I went out and laid all the parts out to inspect them for any obvious casting errors and ensure that everything was present.  With such a large kit discovering that a part is missing could take many weeks or months if you are not thorough in the beginning.

As I mentioned, the legs are by far the most complicated aspect of this model.  I was however pleased (and even more so after some further inspection) that the kit is quite posable.  I was concerned that I’d have to settle for a less than dynamic pose for this model as all the pictures I’ve ever seen of it project it as being quite ridged.  This isn’t the case, and in keeping with my other two Warhound Titans, I plan on making this kit in a rather dynamic pose too (as dynamic as you can get for a 470 tone walking city block)

Yep, the head.  I have to say at this point, I was disappointed that this kit unlike the Warhound, doesnt come with the option to have the crew in or out of the cockpit area.  Further to that, I was under the impression that the Titan came with foot crew as well.  I’ll have to order them next time.

This is the body and its beautifully detailed.  I’ve got some great ideas (in my head anyways) of how I’m going to paint this area.  If what I’m thinking comes out the way I see it in my minds eye, its going to be the illest Reaver Titan around

This is the chassis that goes under the body carapace.  I was really impressed with the way the hip area works on this model.  Again, allaying my fears of it having only limited posing ability.

Cool little bits of detail that you can add on to the kit to personalise it more.  Interestingly, the Warhound has these extras too, however they are different moulds.

The 1st of the Reaver Titans weapon systems.  The Laser Blaster.  Nice

Again, much more impressed with this now that I’ve been able to see it unassembled and unpainted.  A lot more detail that I was expecting.

Last but not least, the Apoc missile launcher.  This is one solid piece of resin.  Insane.  It weighs a shit load.

Ok, so I am extremely pleased with this kit.  My level of enthusiasm  to work on it is very high and expect to see a lot of rapid development in the coming weeks.  I have Titans of War on this weekend so I wont be able to do much work on it, but come next week I’ll be hitting it hard.  Firstly cleaning it all up with my trusty Dremmel and then test fitting to get the pose right.  It looks like I’m going to have to paint it in lots of pieces to get the level of finish I want on the paint job.  Much like when I painted the Warhounds, however there is much more detail here and the level of complexity is far greater.

I hope you’re looking forward to this journey as much as I am, I’ve been thinking about out how I’m going to do this kit for some time and I have high expectations on how its going to look completed.

Ok, third post for the day look out!

Again, this is a very quick one to show you some pics of my completed squadron of Iron Hands Landspeeders.  I decided to do a video diary of this build for something different.  I’ve posted the last two tutorials on this pages YouTube channel if you’d like to have a look at them.  I fully magnetised these kits so that they can be put together in various configurations.  I’m a big fan of this now as its difficult to predict what will be a good or bad configuration until you’ve had a few opportunities to pay test them.  Also with all the kits now being plastic its pretty easy to do.

Ok, enough rant

Here are the pics

Thanks for look, comments welcome

Hi all,

Just a really quick post to let everyone know that organisers of QMHE have put the 2012 photo gallery up on their site.  Drop by if you have time and have a look there are some amazing models featured their.  As I mentioned in a previous post I won a few awards at this competition, but the real focus of this competition is the military and car modellers however moving forward I hope to see more wargaming modellers attend in future.  Go like their Face Book page too

Cheers

About 3 weeks ago I played in Quarter Master 3 held here in Brisbane at Greenbank.  Although I didn’t place my Carcharodons did get Best Painted.  Apart from the Trophy I also got some gift certificates that I could spend at an independent gaming store called The Combat Company.  I have to say, I was really impressed with their service.  I ordered the models on a Friday, and I had them on Monday, no fuss.  I ended up getting two, one for my Carcharodons and the other for my Iron Hands.  Now that in 6th Ed troops that have a toughness buff from being on a bike don’t suffer instant death from their original toughness but their buffed toughness, taking out Ork biker Nobz is tough.  But not with this heavy hitter!  Its also really useful at smoking Terminators too who are also a real problem in 6th Ed.  So in my new Iron Hands list that I’ll be using next weekend at Alpha Hobbies Titans of War 1850pt Team Tournament has one it in.

As a matter of fact, I’m so happy with how this one has turned out I’m going to paint the second one as an Iron Hands Vindicator and I’ll be getting another so I can have a Line Breaker formation for games of Apocalypse, which I’ll be playing in Games Workshop Mt Gravatt’s 8000pt November tournament.

Anyways, here are some pics of the finished model.  I have to admit, I really like it without the dozer blade on it.  Reminds me of the old Epic scale Vindicator from back in the day.

ok, thanks for looking

So this is just a very quick post to let everyone know that I’ve just uploaded part 6 of my Landspeeder tutorial onto ThePaintingBunkers YouTube channel.  This part deals with painting and weathering the interior.  I’m just in the process of finishing part 7, decals.  I hope you enjoy.

On a completely different topic I have always wanted to attend Adepticon held each year in Chicago.  I’ve been giving it a lot of thought how awesome it would be to go, and even more awesome to go with a bunch of other guys (or gals) who are into the hobby.  The big hurdle for most people (including myself) is the cost involved.  However in a previous life I knew a lot of people in the travel industry (one of the largest travel agencies in the world, Flight Centre) So I got back in touch with a them to talk about what we could do if there were enough people who’d be keen on coming.  So I put up a small question on my  Facebook page to judge what the level of interest is from other enthusiasts that visit my blog.  Keep in mind that the even isn’t until mid April 2013 so if you do want to go, and all the stars align putting a little cash aside each week would mean that it could happen.

So please take a few moments to let me know what your level of interest would be to attend Adepticon in 2013.  This is really for Australians, but if this gets off the ground it’d be awesome to meet some of you guys in the States.

Ok, thanks for checking it out, hope you like the tutorial!

What a weekend it was!  I have to say when I eventually got home last night at about 10pm I was a spent force.  So let me give you a quick break down of the two days

QMHE

So this is Brisbane’s biggest modelling event and is in its 17th year.  As I mentioned in previous posts its mainly for military modellers as well as car, bike and boat scale enthusiasts too.   However for the past 2 years the event has catered for wargamers as well.  I entered models into three categories.   28mm single miniature, 28mm squad & 28mm vehicle/equipment.

I actually went on Friday night to drop my minis in as the option was to do it Friday night or Saturday morning from 9am til 11am.  I was glad in the end that I took up the option to come in Friday night.  Saturday would have been a seriously bad idea.  I was amazed at how many people there were dropping miniatures in on the Friday night.  It was mayhem.  If you have a look at my Face Book page you’ll see dozens of photos of both events.

Seeing competent military modellers bring their A game is really inspiring to me.  Their techniques and skill levels are so far ahead of most wargaming painters its always great to chat to them to learn new things.  I saw some absolutely amazing models on the day.  So Saturday was spent looking around at all the entries and speaking to various vendors and enthusiasts about modelling, which are my favourite things!  I have even taken the plunge and brought a 1:35 scale military model to try my hand at.  Its an Australian Army Bushmaster PMV.  This kit has been long awaited by many Australian modellers and is Showcase Models first venture into plastic model kits and from all accounts its an amazing debut.  The deal clincher for me was the two part step-by-step build featured in Australia’s only domestic modelling magazine Model Art Australia.  The step-by-step build is thorough and very detailed.  Enough so that I felt that I would be able to do this very detailed kit justice should I attempt it.  So stay tuned for some pictures up in the near future.

So although I wasn’t able to be  present for the awards giving ceremony I had my good friend and also long time miniature painter their to collect any awards I won.  I ended up getting 4 awards.  One Gold for my running Warhound Titan, a Silver for my Legion of the Damned Squad, Silver for my Iron Hands Librarian and lastly Best Paint Finish for my Warhound stomping on the Eldar Wraith Lord.  This was the award I was most impressed with at getting.  To put it into context, its a very big deal for military modellers to award such a coveted prize to a wargaming modeller.  Its good in a way that perhaps the military modeller fraternity  attitudes towards wargaming modellers is beginning to change somewhat.

The day ended with me showing my good friend Michael B, who has only just moved back to Brisbane after a few years overseas, some of my favourite modelling and hobby shops (again, some of my favourite things) Overall I really enjoyed attending QMHE (as always) and was glad that Michael encouraged me to enter a few models.

Next up is Games Day

Games Day

So this was the real big ticket item for me.  I always like attending this event as for me seeing the Golden Daemon entries is the real reason I go.  All the other ancillary activities are just bonuses.  I entered models in two categories.  40k Monster (Chaos Renegade Ogryn Berserker) and my Carcharodons Armies on Parade board.  I was very shocked at the calibre (and quantity) of entries for the Golden Daemon and AoP.  Truly amazing and inspirational.  There were even AoP boards that had been featured in White Dwarf and even the new 40k Rule Book!  As you would expect both of these were stunners.  However at the end of the day the I didn’t win any prizes at Games Day, which I would be lying if I said wasn’t disappointing.  However the AoP winner was not only a good friend of mine’s but also a work colleague who’s “Dead Man Walking” board was sensational.  Up until the event, I’d only seen photos of the board and unfortunately his photographic skills leave a lot to be desired.  The board in person was really a sight to behold.  The winner really was well chosen and a very deserving one at that.  Congratulations again Eddie.

Another great experience I had at GD was sitting in on a Q&A session with Forge World’s Senior Designer Mark Bedford.  This hour long session was very informative and gave me additional insight into the internal workings of this amazing off sprout of Games Workshop.  Little detail was given about the soon to be released Horus Heresy series, but from what he did let on and judging by his body language (like a 6yr old boy on the night before XMas when he knows he’s going to be getting shit loads of presents) I could tell that HH is going to be a defining moment in 40k.

Ok, thats it for me, bit of a long post but I hope you’ve persevered with it.

I picked up the Games Day figurine (a great throw back from the 2nd Ed box cover art) which I plan on painting shortly and maybe entering in next years QMHE and an art book.  The thing that really got me into 40k was the art and imagery that the talented artist that GW employ/freelance produce.  So whenever I have the opportunity to get a new art book I will generally grab it.

I’m aiming to finish off the Landspeeder youtube tutorials this weekend, so expect some more posts on that shortly.  I’ve had some really good feed back from that little experiment of mine, so thank you all that have watched it and offered me constructive feedback.  I intend on doing some more, so if you have any ideas on topics you’d like covered flick me a message.

Thanks again

John

Just sitting at the Sydney Airport and wanted to make a quick post to say its been an epic day and to go and look at my Face Book page for some photos of the event. I’ll be doing a more thorough post in the next few days but the pics on FB should keep you going until then. Enjoy!

A massive congrats to Eddie for taking out armies on parade with his DKoK army and all the other winners, really amazing work

John
