Hello fine people!

Its been a while since my last post… over the weekend I played in my local games workshops 40k tournament called Iron General.  Which I won “Best Painted” for my Iron Hands.  Which to be honest I was a bit surprised about because its a black army and typically its difficult to make black armies look good, so it was pleasing to win best painted.  I came 5th overall too, which was good to.  It was a bit of a rude army list, with 10 Terminators who were accompanied by Lysander and a Librarian with Gate… so yeah…  Those boys can dish out some punishment, but at 760 points, they’d want to…

Anyways, thats taken up my weekend, along with other social commitments so no time for painting.  Now, onto the board.  I have to confess, I was a little disheartened with how this board was beginning to turn out, it wasnt quite what my minds eye had pictured and it didnt seem to be heading in the direction that I wanted it, so finding motivation to paint it was difficult.  However on Tuesday night, I decided just to get on with it and put in 4-5 solid hrs of work and by the end of it I was really pleased at how it was coming along and my enthusiasm for this project was renewed.

Ok, some pics

Ok, so this is a good money shot and will give you a good overall impression of how its going to look competed.  Keep in mind that the photo was taken with my iPhone and because the board is massive my painting lamps dont really cut the mustard to light it properly, but you get the idea.  Now as I write this I have to say that I actually went on and finished it, however I want to wait till its daylight so I can take some proper pictures of it with the Sharks on it.

I’m really pleased with this area of the model.  Which ironically was the area I was most displeased with in the beginning.  However its really come up nicely and looks in my opinion fantastic.  Again, the light is crap but in a few days I’ll take some proper pics for you to see

There is some really awesome detail on this model, its one of those models that you’ll be painting away on and then see something you hadnt noticed before.  An example of which is if you look at the kill marking some soldier has scratched into the wall on the left hand side as you look at it of the door.

Ok, thats it for the time being, I’ll take some proper shots of it most likely on Friday, or Saturday morning depending on light and time.  So until then!

Thanks for looking

John

Hello fine people,

Been a while between post as I have been painting like a daemon to get my army ready for a few tournaments and this coupled with work and other things has meant that there’s been no time to post… however…

I did win Best Painted over the weekend at Quarter Master (QM). This was very pleasing as the calibre presentation was very high and their was some genuine competition present. QM is easily one of the longest running tournaments here in Brisbane (with a few notable exceptions) and attracts some of the best 40k gamers in Queensland. It has not been without controversy and QM 3.6 was not run by its original creator as he stepped aside. It was good to see that Neal who ran 3.6 did a great job and I hope he builds on his success for QM 4.6.

So the tournament is the usual format with 5 games over two days (3 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday) If you want to see pics of the event and dont yet follow my FB page, go have a look. I took lots of pictures of the weekend. So the break down of the games went like this…

Game one. Grudge match between myself and Aaron Baily’s Tyranids. I count Aaron amongst my good friends and he’s an exceptionally talented painter and quite a good gamer too. He too has a blog, so if you haven’t been to have a look at it, stop reading this now and check it out. Our game resulted in a minor loss to me, however it was a fun game and many laughs were had. Aaron’s army actually won the “Peoples Choice” award, which is who the participants of the tournament believe had the best painted army…

Game two. Carcharodons V Hayden Walduck’s Daemons. This game resulted in a comprehensive thrashing of my Sharks. Ouch

Game three. Carcharodons V Kevin Vidgen’s Dark Eldar. My sharks were thrashed within an inch of their lives in this one too… sad face

Game four. Carcharodons V Phil Brigland’s Orks. This was a major win to me. Phil actually won the Sportsmanship award, which I consider to be a massive compliment and in my opinion equal to a podium finish at any tournament. After playing Phil I have to admit its easy to see why he won the accolade. He’s a very easy opponent to play against, with a friendly easy going manner.

Game five. Carcharodons V Ben Avis’s Eldar. This game resulted in a drawer and yet again my burning dislike towards Eldar was deepened.

Overall I placed 15th out of a field of 23 players. So not a hot result, especially after coming of a 3rd at Rebelcon However it was a good weekend overall. The podium finishers were:

1st. Patrick Carter – Necrons

2nd. Josh McGowan – Necrons

3rd. Dave Flemming – Eldar/Grey Knights

Ok, so this weekend I’m playing in a 1750pt GW tournament, Iron General. I’m taking my Iron Hands for a bit of a change. The following weekend its Armies on Parade, and if I get my display board finished in time I plan on entering the sharks. In September there is of course Games Day, and the WW40k 40k Charity event, and then theres October… Its going to be busy…

Ok, thats it for me.

Thanks for dropping in

John

Hello Fine People,

So with a few events coming up in the next few months I thought I’d get busy and do a 2′ x 2′ display board for my Carcharodon’s. I gave this a lot of thought actually. How would I present it, would it be themed or just a space to place the models and give them some context or would it be a modeling extravaganza?

What I decided on was to actually to create a mini diorama.

For those who haven’t read the Badab war books, let me take a small excerpt from vol 11 to give you some context for my idea.

From Imperial Armour volume 11, p114

“Upon departing the Maelstrom Zone, the Carcharodons were to enact a final course of action that would seal their dark legend; what has become know as the Sorrow of Tranquillity. After the surrender of the last Mantis Warriors to the Red Scorpions ended their part in the war, the Carcharodon’s fleet returned to the Endymion Cluster. Their, with the agreement of the Fire Hawks, to whom dominion had now been granted over the former Mantis Warriors’ domains, they assisted the Fire Hawks in bringing the Cluster’s worlds brutally into compliance with their new masters and punished them for their transgressions. The Carcharodons focused their attentions in particular on the Tranquillity system, whose worlds were the primary recruiting and training grounds of the Mantis Warriors Chapter and housed several of the Chapter’s hidden bases and armouries. There the Carcharodons uncovered and ransacked, and from Tranquillity they harvested a generation of young males to fill the Chapter’s losses, forcing them to fight to the death to prove their worth, although the Fire Hawks had expected them to go this far remains unknown. Thus paid in blood, the Carcharodon’s fleet departed the Cluster, with Explorator augers marking its course through the Warp as ascending the galactic plane into the darkness of the outer void once more”

So the plan is to use the FW realm of battle board to depict the Carcharodons uncovering one of the Mantis Warriors hidden armouries and assaulting it, with a few rogue Mantis Warriors trying to defend it. Should be good.

Here is a picture of what basically I’m intending on having it look like.

I’ve since undercoated it and will begin painting tonight.

Ok, that’s it for the moment…

Hello fine people,

Well its been a weekend of some hardcore wargaming action.  Starting off on Friday night with a massive 7hr painting bender to get my army list ready, to comprehensively destroying 3 armies on the 1st day of play, to absolutely getting my ass handed to me on the final two days on day 2…

However, I did manage to come home with 3rd places, which I was really happy with.  Since getting back into playing 40k about 2 years ago, and attending now about 8 or 9 tournaments, finally getting a podium place was very satisfying.

Justin & John did a really good job running the Tournament and always very helpful and diligent with any rules queries.  It was a fun weekend, and I got to play some awesome opponents.

So the break down went like this.

Game 1.  It was the Sharks V Jarrett Bennett’s Necrons’.  This game resulted in a comprehensive victory to the Sharks.

Game 2.  Sharks V Isaac Robertson’s Salamanders Space Marines.  This was a really enjoyable game.  Isaac’s army actually ended up taking out “Best Painted”  The highlight of the game (for Isaac I’m sure) was him destroying the Redeemer carrying Tyberos & his body guard, only to then blow the entire body guard to bits with a Vindicator round… ouch.  Majoy victory to the Sharks in the end

Game 3.  Sharks V Garry Levett’s Grey Knights.  Garry has a very nicely painted army and I’m sure if the tables scenery had been set up any other way he would have faired a lot better.  However because there was the Fortress of Redemption smack bang in the middle of the table, he was unable to bring his armies strengths to bear and was out manoeuvred.   Major Victory to the Sharks

Game 4.  Sharks V Dave Kerr’s Necrons’ with Ork allies.  As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, Dave is a very formidable opponent, one of the top Tier in Qld I’m sure, if not Australia.  He took my army apart in very short order, completely destroying it.  Major Loss to the Sharks.

Game 5.  Sharks V Josh McGowan’s Eldar.  I hate Eldar at the best of times, and when in the hands of a respectable General such as Josh, I knew it was going to be an up hill battle.  I did put up a good fight, but sadly the mission was against me and it resulted in a Major Loss to the Sharks.

Overall I had a great time.  I’ve made a few improvements to the army list, giving it a bit more stand off fire power in the form of a Mortis Pattern Contemptor Dreadnought with twin-linked las cannons, however I think I’ll dump the assault squad, and add in a bit more fire power in the form of either a twin auto cannon MkV Dreadnought or a Devastator squad with 4 missile launchers.

Ok, thats me

hope you all have a great week.

Hello fine people,

Well, I did this tonight in a vein attempt to have my a army ready for a tournament I’m playing in tomorrow… oh well…

Anyways, with the game now changed quite a bit from 5th ed, I figured that having one of these is a good investment…

I’m pretty sure this (with its cyclone that is about to be added) will ruin any flyers day pretty quickly.

nice.

such an awesome model.

I also tried (again in vein) to add a 5 man assault squad with power sword and two plasma pistols… this is how far I got…

One thing I really like about the Carcharodons is that they have bits of all the MK’s of armour in their squads.  It makes for an interesting looking army/unit

Ok, I’m off to get some sleep.

Enjoy

John

Hello fine people,

A few weeks ago I had some people over at my place and one of them was looking at this guy (half complete) and dropped him.  The mini was mostly undamaged, however one of the prongs on his improvised close combat weapon on his left arm broke off.  Despite much searching we never found it… until today.  I have to admit, I was pretty annoyed at the time.  I was really pleased with how this mini was coming along and now that it’d been damaged, with a vital piece completely missing, I have to say I was a little discouraged and all but abandoned the idea of completing it.

I spilt something on the floor today, and was sweeping it up and low and behold there was the prong!  I immediately went and reunited it with my Ogryn and with renewed enthusiasm and a clearer vision of how I was going to finish it, started work.  Below are the results.

I really like this mini for many reasons.  Its got a lot of character and has a real darkness to it along with some incredible sculpting.  I have a great idea for its base too… but I’ll leave that for a surprise.  Its been a real pleasure to paint it however I have no intentions of painting more.  This was just a one off for a bit of fun.

Hope you enjoyed looking

Hello fine people,

A work in progress shot of the Titan.  This is the lower armour of the right leg.  I worked on the whole Titan today, but this is just the part which I thought I’d post up.  Providing something doesn’t come up on the weekend, I’ll be hitting the Titan pretty hard.  Hope you enjoy!

BOOMSAUCE MUTHERFUKERS!!!

ok, just had to get that off my chest.

Hello fine people,

Well, its been an eventful weekend, if you dont “like” my Facebook page, you wouldnt have seen my adventures at Winter Warfest, held at the Enoggera Bowls club here in Brisbane.  It was the 3rd year this event had been run, and Michael Clarke and his other TO’s and sponsors did a superb job.  There were around 30ish gamers at the event and being a liscenced venue, everyone had a great time, the tournie had a really good vibe.  It was the last 5th ed tournie thats being held in Brisbane (to the best of my knowledge)

So go have a look at my FB page for some action shots of the 5 games I played.  The Carchardons played well, and I was really happy with how they did on the tabletop.  However, I do think I’ll incorporate a few minor improves, such as some long range fire power, which the lack of let me down on a few occasions.

So the results went like this

Game 1.  Sharks V Dave Kerrs Blood Angels – Major Victory to Dave.  Dave is a formidable opponent, and his painting skills are amazing too…  It was fun playing a game with two very nicely presented armies on the table top.

Game 2.  Sharks V Danny Whiteheads Salamanders – Major Victory to Me.  Danny has a really well painted and themed Salamanders Army.  He’s a very active member of the gaming community and makes a lot of contributions to WW40K and ADFWGA.  Check them both out and support their events if you’re able to.

Game 3.  Sharks V James Allans Space Wolves – Major Victory to Me.  James is new to the hobby, and although I annihilated his army, he played with good spirit.

Game 4. Sharks V Pattycake Carters Necrons – Minor Victory to Pattycake.  Patty Carter is a formidable opponent at the best of times, however even at half speed while suffering from a major hangover from the night before, his Necrons were a real handful.  I’m sure if he was more compos mentis, he would have flogged the shit out of my Sharks.

Game 5.  Sharks V Gareth Combes Necrons – Minor Victory to Me.  Gareth was a great opponent and played well.  He was a great opponent to have as my last one, great attitude and easy going.

Over all I placed 10th in the Tournament, with 137 point total.  (1st was 162)  But the award that I was really happy to get was Best Painted.  Michael tells me that it was a by a landslide too.  So thanks to everyone that voted.  It was great to receive such a great compliment from other gamers.

I also won two prizes as a part of winning Best Painted, donated by Winter Warfests sponsors.  Miniature Scenery & Scibor Miniatures.

The prize from Scibor, who by the way do some kick ass after market minis for 40k and parallel ranges to GW’s range of minis were these scenic bases.  They have a lot of character and are extremely well cast

The second prize was a paint organisation rack from Miniature Scenery (CNC Workshop)  Although I use a paint organiser already, I’ll still assemble this one as I’ve been a little curious as how it’ll work

So, thats it for me now.

Thanks for stopping in

Hello fine people,

Just a very quick update.  I have just about finished the crippled Eldar Wraithlord for the base of my 2nd Warhound Titan.  Here is a work in progress shot for you

I know that some of you might not know what I’m going on about here, so this is a pic to help contextualise whats going on

So its starting to look pretty good.  I was a bit worried about how the Wraithlord would come out, particularly given how most Eldar’s paint schemes are typically portrayed.  However, I am quite pleased with how its ended up.  I’ve given myself til the 26th of July to get this Titan finished.  Personally I think I’ll piss it in, but we’ll see.

Ok, I’m off to bed, comments always welcome

Regards

John
